Store it, don’t waste it

One of main reasons we waste food is because it’s gone off.  Sometimes that’s because plans have changed or the food’s been bought but forgotten about, but often it’s because of how it’s been stored.  Here’s a few tips that should help your food to live extra days, weeks and even months.

A new lease of life

Try out the following tips to revive your food:

  • Soaking wilted greens in cold water for 30 minutes shocks and revives them for a green salad or sandwich.
  • Rock hard dried fruit that has sat too long in the cupboard can soften by pouring boiling water over the fruit in a Pyrex bowl, to soak a bit.
  • Try washing other produce in a bowl of water, vinegar and a dash of salt. This not only cleans them but helps extend the life of your perishables as well.
  • When it comes to stale boxes of cereal, chips or nuts, they can have a second chance with a small trick. Put them on a cookie sheet, bake them for 3 to 5 minutes at 350 degrees and then put them in an airtight container. You get an extra 3 to 5 days doing that.
  • Putting a piece of bread in with cookies in an airtight container can keep the cookies fresh and moist.

Watch the Dates

Keep an eye on the 'best before' and 'use-by' dates. The 'best before' dates are more about quality than safety, except for eggs. So when the date runs out it doesn't mean that the food will be harmful, but it might begin to lose its flavour and texture.
