Handy Tools

Knowing what handy storage tools are out there, to help you in the kitchen, is great for reviving, rescuing and storing food.

Don't be afraid of trial and error; if you don't get it right the first time adjust the measurement for next time.

Bread bags

Special cloth bags that keep bread fresher for longer.

Mug (300ml)

Handy for measuring uncooked rice.

1 adult portion = 1/4 mug
1 child portion =  21/2 Tbsp

(as sizes of mugs vary, use these measures as a guide to work out your own perfect portions).

Blender

Good way to use up fruit or vegetables.

Tupperware containers

Keep dry foods fresh.

Airtight boxes


With well fitting lids to store leftovers, grated cheese, sandwiches.

Spaghetti measure

Not sure how to measure pasta? Start with a spaghetti measurer.

You just fill up the hole for the serving size you want with dry spaghetti; pasta can be measured with scales.

Clingfilm

Cover leftovers or cooked food before storing in the fridge.

Weighing scales

A decent set of weighing scales is a vital piece of kitchen equipment in helping to manage meal portion sizes; weights are often given on food packaging.

Ice cube trays

Freeze herbs and stock. Once frozen into cubes, transfer ‘blocks’ to freezer bags and store in freezer until needed.

Tablespoon

Good for measuring out portions of rice, beans and dried fruits.

1 adult portion = 4 spoonfuls
1 child portion = 2½ spoonfuls

Storage bags and clips

Keep a variety of storage bags. Bag clips are great for sealing open packets.

Freezer bags

Store extra food and keep vegetables and fruits fresh. Use freezer bags for longer storage.

Stayfresh longer bags

Keep fruits and vegetables fresh for weeks.
